In Scottish legend, the goddess Brìde was captured on the eve of Samhain by Beira, a diety known as the Queen of Winter who shaped the land to her will. She was released when the King of Summer gifted her young plant saplings and said to tell the winter queen that spring would soon return. This day is now known as Imbolc, the pagan festival of spring.
